DOS (Day of the Seafarer) 2016 observed

On 25th June 2016, DOS (Day of the Seafarer) 2016 was celebrated across the Globe. The theme for 2016 was ‘At Sea for all.’ The theme clearly links to the 2016 WMD (World Maritime Day) theme. This theme signifies the fact that seafarers not only serve for shipping sector or for themselves but for each one of us. This day is celebrated to thank the seafarers for their significant contribution towards the world economy as well as civil society.

International Day observed to support torture victim (H2)

International Day was observed to support torture victims on 22nd June 2016,. It is an annual event and observed to through light on torture as a crime. Consequently, the day seeks to support and honor torture victim across the globe. While torture annihilates the personality of victim, it also denies inherent dignity. Furthermore, torture is considered crime under the International Law. Therefore, it is prohibited and unjustified. This law holds binding for all members of international communities. Torture practice is widespread and considered crime against civilization. Therefore, the International Day to support torture victims was first proclaimed on 12th December 1997. It is based on resolution 52/149 of the UN (United Nations) General Assembly.

IDDAIL (International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking) observed (H2)

IDDAIL (International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking) was observed on 26th June 2016,. The theme for this year was ‘Listen First’. The theme aims to increase awareness and support for drug prevention. In addition, this theme emphasizes on the science of drug trafficking and abuse. Most of all, it is a good investment for the well-being of youth, children, families and communities. On this event, the UNODC released the WDR (World Drug Report) 2016. The day was first proclaimed on 7th December 1986 based on resolution 42/112 of the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly). Furthermore, this day motivates people to strengthen corporation against drug abuse. Finally, the PFBS (Punjab Frontier of Border Security Force) from India organized a Cycling Rally.

After Nine years, Panama Canal re-opened

Newly renovated Panama Canal was reopened on 26th June 2016 for larger businesses. Chinese-owned container vessel CSP (Cosco Shipping Panama) was the first one to cross after reopening. The Panama project started in 2007. This expanded reopening of Panama Canal was delayed for almost 2 years. Overall reasons behind this delay were cost overruns, construction delays and labour strike. Altogether, it is expected that the project will enhance port demands for handling ships.

Sweden inaugurated world’s first-ever electric road

Sweden inaugurated world’s first-ever electric road on 22nd June 2016. A stretch of this electric road was opened for test. This test was taken across some parts of E16 roads. There is a wired current collector that feeds the current downwards to the hybrid electric truck motor. These tests will be continued till 2018. Furthermore, knowledge will be provided on electric roads and how they work. Additionally, citizens will also be informed regarding the usage of this technology and precautions. Most noteworthy, this experiment is a part of the government’s sustainable 2030 goals. This goal includes fossil fuel-free vehicles fleet and energy efficiency by 2030.



India-US signed 8 MoUs for improving sustainable development and economic growth

On 8th June 2016, Unites states and India agreed upon 8 MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) for improving sustainable development and economic growth across the two nations. The agreements included various fields such as Energy Security cooperation, climate Change, Terrorist screening and clean energy etc. The event took place at the White House in the presence of President of US Barack Obama and Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. The MoUs were finalized between the Defense Ministry of Indian Government and the Defense department of the US. Apart from the Agreement signing, both leaders also issued a statement wherein India will be recognized as a defense partner by the US.

WBD (World Blood Donors) Day 2016 observed

On 14th June 2016, WBDD (World Blood Donors Day) 2015 was celebrated across the globe. The theme for this year’s WBDD campaign was ‘Blood Connects us all’. This theme throws significant light on the common connection and bonds all individuals share through their blood. Also, this year’s WBDD slogan is ‘Share Life, give blood’. The focus of this slogan is on voluntary blood donation systems. These schemes play a vital part in encouraging individuals to promote community cohesion and care for each other. The WBDD was first established in the year 2004. This day is also celebrated as Karl Landsteiner’s birth anniversary, known for distinguishing blood groups for the first time in 1990.

WEAAD (World Elder Abuse Awareness Day) observed

On 15th June 2016, WEAAD (World Elder Abuse Awareness Day) observed across the glove. This day is celebrated with the objective of voicing concern against the suffering and abuse inflicted on old people across the world. To observe this day, various events are conducted across the world for raising awareness about elder abuse as well as promote ways to fight such abuse. By the year 2025, it is estimated that the world population of 60-plus individuals will reach 1.2 billion. Elder abuse has become a serious social abuse and because of lack of any appropriate action or law, it is not being controlled now.

MoU/Agreements approved bilateral relations between India and Taiwan

On 15th June 2016, Union Cabinet approved the MoU/Agreements between India and Taiwan. The MoU has been agreed for improving bilateral relations between the two nations in the agriculture field as well as allied sectors. Apart from that, a new agreement was also signed for Air Services between the two nations. The MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) has been signed between TECC (Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre) and ITAT (India Taipei Association in Taipei) in India and Taiwan respectively. This memorandum will be beneficial across sectors such as Horticulture, Agriculture, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Food Processing, Environmental Sustainability as well as Genetic Resources.

WDCD (World Day to Combat Desertification) 2016 observed

On 17th June WDCD (World Day to Combat Desertification) 2016 was observed. The theme for this year’s WDCD was, ‘Inclusive cooperation for achieving Land Degradation Neutrality’. Also, the slogan for this year was ‘Protect Earth. Restore Earth. Engage People.’ The objective of the theme is focusing on achievement of LDN (Land Degradation Neutrality) which will lead to the larger objective of achieving SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). Also, the slogan also addresses the significance of comprehensive cooperation and participation towards achieving LDN. The WDCD is being celebrated since 1995 with the objective of promoting public awareness for combating desertification and drought effects.

Namibia and India and signed two MoUs on Civil Servant Services and ICT-COE

On 16th June 2016, Namibia and India signed two MoUs (Memorandum of Understanding). The first MoU was building capacity for the Namibian civil servants and the second MoU was setting up an ICT-COE (Information and Communications technology- Centre of Excellence). The agreement was signed between Hage Geingob of Namibia and President of India Pranab Mukherjee.

UNCTAD releases WIR (World Investment Report) 2016

On 21st June 2016, the UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) released the WIR (World Investment Report) 2016. The title of this report was ‘Investor Nationality: Policy Challenges’. The report analyzed the new ability of policymakers to distinguish between “foreign” and “domestic” entities across the globalized economy. It also highlights their ability to provide framework for ownership problems in this new investment policymaking scenario.

Britain voted to exit (EU European Union) in a historic referendum

On 24th June 2016, Britain people voted to exit (EU European Union) in a historic referendum. The referendum ‘to be a member’ or ‘to leave’ got 48.1% and 51.9% votes respectively. Also, the turnout for referendum was higher compared to 2015 elections. Scotland, London and Northern Ireland voted ‘to stay back’ with EU while English shire and Wales voted Brexit (Britain Exit) from EU. The Brexit campaigners are for more concerned about costs which outweighs the cost concerns if Britain leaves EU. After this historic referendum, Prime Minister of Britain David Cameron resigned from his post.

South Korea and India launched Korea Plus

On 18th June 2016, South Korea and India together launched a special project named Korea Plus. This initiative will aim at facilitating as well as promoting Korean Investments across the Indian sub-continent. This platform was initiated by Nirmala Sitharaman (Commerce and Industry Minister) and Joo Hyunghwan (Trade Minister- Energy & Industry, Korea Government). This Korea Plus mandates will be covering the total investment spectrum that includes supporting Korean firms for smooth marker entry in India. It will also ensure that the issues encountered by Korean firms in doing businesses in India are reduced as well as Korean business policies are advocated to the government for smooth business flow.

India and Thailand sign 2 agreements: Cooperation in Education and Culture sectors

During the Prime Minister of Thailand (General) Prayut Chan-o-Cha’s three day visit to India; two sets of agreements were signed between the Indian government and Government of Thailand. These two agreements were related to the extension of CEP (Cultural Exchange Program) as well as a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between Chiang-Mai University of Thailand and Nagaland University. The signing event took place on 18th June 2016 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan at New Delhi were the Thailand PM concluded his Indian visit. Both Prime Ministers also agreed on cooperating across various other areas such as military, cyber security, intelligence, maritime security etc.

UNPS (United Nations Public Service) Day 2016 celebrated globally

On 23rd June, the UNPS (United Nations Public Service) Day 2016 was celebrated globally. This day is celebrated to signify the contributions of administrators and public servants. The celebration of this event took place at the UN Headquarters at New York. The event was a knowledge-sharing platform. The theme for this year signified the innovative approaches of industries and public services. The day indicates the public service contributions across various global developmental processes. It also encourages young citizens to pursue a public sector career. The day was first celebrated in 2003.

IWD (International Widows’ Day) 2016 observed across the globe

On 23rd June 2016, IWD (International Widows’ Day) 2016 was observed across the globe. This day is observed to seek awareness about widowed women across the world. Widows are sometimes neglected in statistics and unobserved by researchers. Most importantly, they are ignored by the CSOs (Civil Society Organization). They also suffer from social exclusion, ostracism, violence, extreme poverty, homelessness as well as discrimination in custom and law. The day aims to sensitize global population about their misery and share knowledge to help them.

WHD (World Hydrography Day) 2016 observed

On 21st June 2016, WHD (World Hydrography Day) 2016 was celebrated across the globe. The theme for this year was “Hydrography – the key to well-managed seas and waterways.” The theme aims to focus the fundamental hydrography importance. On this day, IHO (International Hydrographic Organization) was established 95 years ago. WHD was first observed in the year 2005. This day is observed to improve public awareness regarding the vitality of hydrography. Hydrographic is measuring water depth, currents and tides. It also involves surveying and fixing navigational hazards lying across the seafloor. Hydrography information helps in maintaining a safe environment for humans in, under and across the sea.

Tech Mahindra acquired UK-origin BIO Agency

On 22nd Tech Mahindra acquired UK based firm BIO Agency. Tech Mahindra is a technology services firm. BIO Agency is a digital transformation company from UK. The deal valued forty-five million pound will be an all-cash acquisition. Tech Mahindra will be paying twenty-two million pounds upfront and surplus 5 million in cash. Remaining amount will be paid in the form of deferred payments on the company performance. Tech Mahindra will get 100% shares of BIO Agency. BIO agency specializes in digital transformation in sectors like financial, retail and travel. This move will expand Tech Mahindra’s digital portfolio. It will ensure better services, digital strategy, customer experiences etc. for Tech Mahindra. The transaction’s closing date is expected by July 2016 first week. The acquisition will help BIO Agency make contacts with enterprise, telecom clients of TechM.



WRD (World Refugee Day) observed across the globe

On 20th June 2016, the world observed WRD (World Refugee Day). This day is observed every year for drawing attention towards the plight faced by refuges across the world, celebrate their resilience and courage as well as renew the global commitment towards refugee problems. This day also recognizes the various contributions made by the refugees to the nations hosting them. A large number of Refugees are currently in exile and trying to escape the human-made or natural disasters. Almost 4/5th of world’s refugees are hosted by developing nations. Around 2.3 million global refugees have taken asylum in forty-eight least developed nations.

IDY (International Day of Yoga) 2016 celebrated across the Globe

On 21st June 2016, IDY (International Day of Yoga) was celebrated across the globe. The theme for this year was ‘Connect the Youth’. This year’s celebration highlighted the significance of healthy living in realizing out SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) that were adopted by 193 Member States of the UN in 2015. The Indian Union Government organized an event the NEMYD (National Event of Mass Yoga Demonstration) at the Chandigarh Capitol Complex were Narendra Modi performed yoga himself.



QIA (Qatar Investment Authority) and NIIF signed MoU for facilitating investment in the infrastructure sector of India

On 5th June 2016, QIA (Qatar Investment Authority) and NIIF (National Investment and Infrastructure Fund) signed a MoU for facilitating investments towards the infrastructure sector of India. The event took place in Doha when Narendra Modi, Indian President visited Qatar. The aim of this MoU is to help the QIA in studying the investment opportunities across the infrastructure in India. In exchange for this information, QIA will be developing a framework so that both sides can work on effective joint investments. This MoU is valid for 1 year during which both parties shall discuss as well as finalize on principles, criteria and terms for these investments.

Forbes releases list of Highest-Paid Athletes of the World 2016

On 8th June 2016, Forbes released a list of 100 Atleletes of the world who are highest paid. Soccer champion Christiano Ronaldo topped the list with an estimated 88 Million (US) Dollars earnings. These top earning atheletes come from 23 different nations and compete across 10 sports. The list is maxed by Americans as well as baseball players. The calculations of their earnings is based on salaries, bonuses, prize money, apprearances and endorsements. The second and third position was earned by Lionel Messi (soccer icon) and LeBron James (NBA). Similarly, the fouth and fifth place was earned by Roger Federer (Tennis) and Kevin Durant (Basketball Player).

LinkedIn acquired by Microsoft for 26.2 billion dollars

On 13th June 2016, LinkedIn Corporation and Microsoft Corporation announced their definitive agreement status. Microsoft will be acquiring LinkedIn Corporation for 196 dollars/share. This transaction will be an all-cash which will include the net cash of LinkedIn. However, the distinct culture, independence and brand of LinkedIn will be retained. Microsoft is an international MNC with its headquarters in Washington. Microsoft is involved in developing, manufacturing, licensing, supporting and selling personal computers, consumer electronics, computer software and related services. LinkedIn is an online business-oriented service in the social networking platform.

Norway becomes the first nation to ban deforestation

Recently, Norway announced that it became the nation on the world to ban deforestation completely. On 26th May 2016, the Parliament of Norway pledged that it will make the public-procurement policy of the government deforestation free. This decision was made after a MP committee suggested putting regulations for ensuring state’s complete withdrawal in any rainforest deforestation policy. The lawmakers of Norway also pledged to find alternatives sources for significant products like soy, beef, timber and palm oil so that the impact on the nation’s ecosystem is little. This pledge was taken by Norway, United Kingdom and Germany at the United Nations 2014 Climate Summit.

USA grabs FINA Women WPWL (Water Polo World League) Super Final

On 12th June 2016, the Senior National Women’s Team of USA grabbed the FINA Women WPWL (Water Polo World League) Super Final trophy. USA defeated Spain by 13-7 during the final match that took place in Shanghai (China). This is USA’s third straight victory at the FINA and tenth overall. The third position was won by Australia by defeating China 11-3. FINA is an international Water Polo League and the event is organized annually. First continental tournaments are being played from which finalists for the Super Final League emerge. FINA was established in 1908.



India, Qatar MoU on tourism approved by Union Cabinet

A MoU was signed between Qatar and India on 1st June 2016 after the approval from Union cabinet. This MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was signed with the objective of improving the cooperation among participating nations in the Tourism field. This MoU will help in creating favorable environment for long term cooperation and mutual benefit in Tourism field. Under this understanding, both nations will exchange their publications, expertise, data, statistics and information related to the tourism sector. It is enable the upliftment of the tourism sector through cooperative exchange of propaganda, programs, marketing and promotion and advertisements of the tourism industry of both nations. It will also enable two-way visits of media, opinion makers and tour operations for promotion.

‘World Oceans Day’ celebrated across the globe

On 8th June 2016, the world celebrated the ‘World’s Oceans Day’. Theme for this day was Healthy oceans and healthy planet. With this theme, the focus for this year’s celebration will be curbing the enormous plastic population across the world oceans. Plastic pollution has become a dangerous threat to the oceans. Their degradation rate is very slow which pollutes the waterways continuously. Apart from this, plastic pollution also affects the aquatic animal health because animals as well as zooplankton eat micro beads which are mistaken as food. Thereby, it also impacts the health of humans who eat these sea animals. During this event, the UN also recognizes photographers through AWODOP (Annual World Oceans Day Oceanic Photo) competition held at UN headquarters.

World’s 100 MPW (Most Powerful Women) List for 2016 released

On 6th June 2016, Forbes released World’s 100 MPW (Most Powerful Women) List for 2016. The list included women who significantly impacted the media, businesses, politics, philanthropy and more. The four metrics that were used for preparing the list were media presence, money, impact and influence. Angela Merkel (German Chancellor) topped the list this year. She has been topping this list for the past six years. Second and third position was given to Hillary Clinton (US Presidential Candidate) and Janet Yellen (Federal Reserve Chair). The automobile section was topped by Marry Barra (General Motors CEO). Oprah Winfrey, popular personality stood in the 21st position. The newcomers that joined the list this year included two philanthropists, two billionaires, company chairpersons, five CEOs and US SC justices.



MoU between FCAA (French Civil Aviation Authority) and DGCA approved by Union Cabinet

On 1st June 106, a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between the FCAA (French Civil Aviation Authority) and DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India) was approved by Union Cabinet of India. The objective behind signing this MoU was implementing the TCP (Technical Cooperation Program) for the promotion as well as implementation of the recommended practices and standards of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization). This TCP will be beneficial in enhancing the expertise and skills of the officers of DGCA. This will also benefit mutual understanding between the parties for conducting training for managers, technicians and engineers. The validity of this MoU will be for four years.

‘Self-Made American Women List’ of Forbes includes two women of Indian origin

On 1st June 2016, Forbes magazine announced it second yearly list of most successful and wealthiest self-made women of America which also included 60 trailblazers. This list in includes women who made their mark in this world through innovation and invention. This ‘Self-Made American Women List’ of Forbes included two women of Indian origin. Indian-born Neerja Sethi was ranked 16th in this list while Jayshree Ullal, CEO and President of Arista Networks was ranked 30th. The top rank was given to Diane Hendricks who is heading ABC Supply, the biggest wholesale distributor across America.

International Day observed on ‘Innocent Children Victims of Aggression’, 2016

On 3rd June 2016, International Day was observed across the globe on ‘Innocent Children Victims of Aggression’, 2016. The objective of this day is acknowledging the numerous pain that children across the globe suffer being victims of mental, physical as well as emotional abuse. This day was first observed on 19th August 1982 and focused on the Lebanon War (1982) victim. The day acknowledges the UN’s commitment towards protecting the children’s rights.

PM Modi and Ghani launched the India-Afghan Friendship Dam

On 4th June 2016, President of Afghanistan Dr. A. Ghani and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi jointly launched the famous India-Afghan Friendship Dam. The dam has been launched in the Western Afghanistan province. The Dam, previously termed as the Salma Dam is situated on the Chist-e-Sharif River neighboring Iran. As per the new project, the Dam will be irrigating land of 75000 hectares as well as will generate power of volume 42 MV (Mega Watts). During this event, Narendra Modi was awarded with AAK (Amir Amanullah Khan Award) Award by the President of Afghan. It will be a landmark infrastructural Union Government funded project which will include 1500 Afghan and Indian Engineers.

Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s largest ASF (annual security forum) inaugurated in Singapore

On 3rd June 2016, Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s largest ASF (annual security forum) was inaugurated in Singapore. This was the 15th Asian Security Summit that openly discussed and debated the security measures across the Asia-Pacific area. This Summit was launched in 2002 by the Government of Singapore and London based IISS (International Institute of Strategic Studies). The major issues discussed during the meeting were North Korean military provocations, counterterrorism, cyber security, Islamist extremism and military competition
